Fravel check-in: Living root bridge of Mawlynnong

The runway for the day was made of vibrant living roots hanging above a stream in Mawlynnong; one that I thought could only exist in vividly described fictional lands of extraordinary fantasy novels. With every step that I took on the intertwined roots, something in my heart would gently untangle.

Upon reaching the other end of the bridge, I took a moment to absorb the extraordinary beauty of this simple experience (And that, my friend, is not advisable at all when you are descending towards slippery rocks in the middle of a stream.) So I slipped, fell, came out drenched and smothered in algae; leaving one of my photographer friends stunned, the other in an uncontrollable fit of laughter. The last picture below is testimony to my undying love for posing for the camera, without a care for minor disasters like the one I just had.

Fashion highlight: Braided hair and slit playsuit from Zara.

Travel highlight: 100 year old living root bridge in Mawlynnong (Meghalaya), known to be cleanest village in the whole of Asia.

Travelling to Mawlynnong: Take a flight to Guwahati -> 3 hours cab ride to the hill station Shillong  -> 3.5 hours by cab to Mawlynnong. In Mawlynnong, you can explore the area on foot as places of interest are within 2 kms radius. As the name suggests, Meghalaya receives rainfall almost throughout the year, so don’t forget your raincoat! The best time to visit is between October and February, when the rainfall is relatively less, making it more comfortable to go hiking around the area. You may also like to travel to Dawki (cleanest river in Asia) in the same trip and enjoy a boat ride in the crystal clear waters of the river. Most guest rooms would have modest facilities, so a little bit of patience will keep you happier at Mawlynnong.

I am sure you’ll love meeting the meticulous, soft spoken locals as much as seeing their heritage root bridges- just as I did.

Until next time…..Fravel Along !

XO
